As we age our skin progressively loses its elasticity and starts to sag causing looseness and folds. This sagging of the skin and deeper tissues produces the following common signs of facial ageing:
- in the brow area it creates a "heavy" or "hooded" appearance over the eyes.
- on the cheeks and sides of the face it produces loose skin and sagging cheeks
- along the lower face and jawline it causes looseness and jowls
- around the neck the skin becomes progressively looser and ultimately develops vertical folds.
THE REVOLUTIONARY 'CONTOURLIFT™'
The option of a Traditional Facelift is not infrequently resisted or outrightly rejected by patients because of the extent and length of the surgery, the recovery period, the (unwarranted) fear of looking radically "different", potential serious complications, the costs and last, but not least, the extent and visibility of the scars.
In contrast, the new and revolutionary
ContourLift™ developed by Dr Gregory Ruff in the USA overcomes all the foregoing concerns. In a
ContourLift™ 10cm lengths of surgical suture material (the "threads") are inserted under the skin through tiny slits within the hair. Each thread has tiny barbs along its length and it is these which lift the skin and return it to its former and more youthful position. By utilising tiny slits, which when healed are undetectable, a ContourLift™ avoids the embarrassing scars seen with traditional facelifts. The threads are not removed nor do they dissolve. They remain in place permanently as they do in most traditional facelifts.
The ContourLift™ is suitable for all areas of the face and can even be used on males with thinning hair or no hair at all. However, you don't need to have the whole face done at the one time - you need only do those areas that currently need lifting. The other areas can be done separately if and when you ever feel they need to.
In summary, the advantages of a ContourLift™ over Traditional Facelift Surgery include:
- walk-in, walk-out' procedure (no hospital stay required)
- no general anaesthetic - Local Anaesthesia with Intravenous Sedation is used instead
- it is a shorter procedure ( average for a full face is 2½ hours vs 5 hours for a Traditional Facelift)
- it gives you a 'refreshed but natural look' rather than a "tight", "plastic" or "wind-tunnel" appearance
- by looking 'natural' patients can be confident people won't know what they've had done
- no visible scars - not even your hairdresser will find the tiny slits within the hair!
- quicker recovery time
- less costly
- minimal or no pain
- potential side effects are usually minor and transient
- most of the serious potential complications of standard facelift surgery are avoided
- can be "topped up" in the future when necessary by simply adding more threads
A ContourLift™ is suited to those people who have an early to medium degree of skin laxity and sagging rather than an excessive amount of loose, saggy and stretched skin. It is also an option for those patients who have had a previous facelift and the face is once again starting to sag. . At your initial consultation Dr Mayson will assess your face and your skin's elasticity and advise whether a ContourLift™ is an option for you. Basically, the less the amount of loose, stretched skin you have, the greater your chance of being suitable for it.
HOW IS IT DONE?
The ContourLift™ is usually performed in the privacy of our own Clinic's Operating Theatre under Local Anaesthesia and IV (Twilight) Sedation administered for your comfort and safety by a Specialist Anaesthetist. Although it is a 'walk-in, walk-out' procedure you cannot go home alone or drive during the first 24 hours.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR CONTOURLIFT™ SURGEON
If you are considering a ContourLift™, please consider the following very carefully before deciding on where to have your procedure.
Consider the Doctor's Specialty
Although minimally invasive a ContourLift™ is still a
surgical procedure and as such we recommend it be done by either a:
- Certified Cosmetic Surgeon with an FACCS (Surgical) qualification from The Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery; or
- Plastic Surgeon
with experience in
BOTH Traditional Facelift Surgery
AND ContourLift™ Surgery.
Does Your Intended Doctor Perform Traditional Facelift Surgery?
- We believe that experience in Traditional Facelift Surgery provides the best background knowledge and "feel" for accurate placement of the Contour Threads. If your intended doctor does not do Traditional Facelifts how can he possibly envisage the tissues and the anatomy under the skin?
- If your intended doctor performs ALL types of Facelifts he/she is then able to offer you the most appropriate alternative option should you be unsuitable for a ContourLift™. If they do not, you may be recommended a ContourLift™ when your needs would be better served by a Traditional Facelift.
Where Is Your ContourLift™ To Be Done?Is it an adequately equipped and sterile Operating Theatre with monitoring equipment and resuscitation facilities to anaesthetic standards? If not, you could be compromising your safety and increasing the risk of a post-operative infection of your face.
Will There Be A Specialist Anaesthetist Present?
The possible consequences of NOT having a Specialist Anaesthetist present include:
- Your procedure could prove a painful and distressing experience. Only a Specialist Anaesthetist has the knowledge and experience to administer the specific medications in their optimal doses and combinations to make the surgery pain-free.
- If you are told that instead of a Specialist Anaesthetist a Nurse will be giving you the drugs on the doctor's instructions, once again DON'T PROCEED! This is a very UNSAFE practice and one which you should not even consider. Neither the doctor nor his nurse will likely have the knowledge and experience of an anaesthetist in the use of these drugs and how to treat any unexpected adverse reactions to them.
- Finally, ask yourself this: If there is no Specialist Anaesthetist and you have an unexpected adverse event or reaction to any medication, who in that room will have an anaesthetist's knowledge necessary to treat your emergency situation? The simple but frightening answer is: probably NOBODY!
