'Composite Skin Resurfacing' is a term created by Dr Mayson to describe his unique technique of combining the individual treatments of Chemical Peeling, Surgical Dermabrasion and Laser Skin Resurfacing into the one procedure. To the best of our knowledge, no other Cosmetic Surgeon uses this procedure and Dr Mayson developed the technique in order to give his patients superior results whilst at the same time lowering the risks of potential complications.
To grasp the concept and benefits of Dr Mayson's technique one must first appreciate that Chemical Peeling, Surgical Dermabrasion and Laser Skin Resurfacing are, in fact, simply different 'tools' - each of which in its own way can bring about 'resurfacing of the skin' through removal of the skin's upper layers. Each of these three 'tools' has its own specific advantages and it's only by using all three together at the one procedure that the best possible resurfacing results can be achieved.
Historically, back in 1994 when Laser Skin Resurfacing was first introduced, it was common practice worldwide to laser only those individual areas of the face that required it. For example, if a patient had only upper lip lines, only the upper lip would be lasered. If there were also lines under the eyes, those areas would be lasered as well. However, Dr Mayson soon realised that the problem in treating individual facial areas was that it left areas of different colour and texture in between. Even lasering the entire face was not the solution because that could leave sharp lines of demarcation along the jawline between the lasered facial skin and the untreated neck skin. So, Dr Mayson included Chemical Peeling of the areas between the individually lasered areas and along the jawline. This produced the dual benefit of avoiding both contrast areas and demarcation lines.
The other universal problem of any laser resurfacing technique is that it is impossible for any surgeon to know from looking at the changes in the skin as they are lasering just how deep in the skin they are. If they go too deep, scarring will result. If they don't go deep enough, wrinkle correction won't be as good. So Dr Mayson set about adding Surgical Dermabrasion as the third 'tool' to allow him to know just how deeply he can safely go when 'chasing' deep wrinkles.
Since Dr Mayson developed his 'Composite Skin Resurfacing' technique in the mid 1990s his conclusions are that:
- Overall appearances are improved and more uniform;
- Elimination of wrinkles is greater;
- Contrast areas rarely occur;
- No demarcation lines along the jawline have been observed; and most importantly
- Dr Mayson has never had a single case of scarring in any patient - nor did he before he developed his Composite Skin Resurfacing Technique!
HOW IS IT DONE?
Composite Skin Resurfacing is performed in the privacy of our own Clinic under a combination of IV (Twilight) Sedation and Local Anaesthesia. Two hours after your procedure you may go home but
because of the medications used you cannot go home alone or drive for 24 hours. For the next 10 days you will need to attend the Clinic daily to have your dressings changed. Healing is usually complete within 10 days and you can then resume applying make-up and return to work and social activities.
