'Age Spots' are those commonly seen brown spots that appear on the face and the backs of the hands as we get older.
Although various treatments exist one of the most effective and safest is the Q-switched YAG Laser. This laser works by specifically targeting the pigment in the brown spots. It does not destroy the overlying skin and therefore the risk of scarring is negligible. The procedure is quick, inexpensive and essentially painless and usually only one treatment is necessary.
IS IT PAINFUL? The procedure is easily tolerable and rarely do patients ever request a local anaesthetic. The laser light is emitted in very rapid pulses and many people liken the sensation to the snaps of a thin rubber band against the skin. If preferred, an anaesthetic cream can be applied prior to treatment but it must be applied one hour before in order to be effective.
HOW IS IT DONE?
Usually only one treatment session is usually necessary. Rarely do people require a second treatment.
Following treatment, each 'age spot' looks red. Thin brown crusts then develop over each treatment site much like they do on a skin abrasion. During this time it is important to continue to apply the ointment prescribed by the doctor. You cannot apply make-up over these crusts until they fall off in 7-10 days. Once the crusts fall off the sites will look dull pink in colour but this stage can be camouflaged with foundation. This pinkness will disappear over the next 1-3 months.
WHAT OTHER PIGMENTED LESIONS CAN BE TREATED WITH THIS LASER?
This laser is also ideally suitable for the safe removal of individual freckles and flat, pigmented sunspots. Please note however, that if you have many facial freckles, a Medium-Depth Chemical Peel of the whole face will produce a more uniform result than will lasering each individual freckle. Conversely, if you have only a few freckles or pigmented sunspots, laser removal is a better and less expensive option than chemically peeling the whole face.
ARE THERE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS?
The Q-switched YAG Laser is very safe and serious complications such as scarring with this laser have never been seen by Dr Mayson.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
Treatments are very affordable and being a rapid-fire laser, the Q-switched YAG Laser can treat many spots within a short time. The doctor will give you an estimate of cost at your initial consultation.
